Mold Remediation

Mold Remediation

So you found some mold in your home…now what? Do you look on the internet and try to fix it yourself (bleach and water? Vinegar?) or do you call in a specialist?

First of all, do you know what type of mold it is? There are many types of mold that can grow in many different places, and while some of them aren’t as harmful, some of them can be extremely harmful to your health. Second, where is the mold and how much of it is there? Is it just a little mold growing in the corner in your shower, or is it mold that may have eaten away at your entire carpet pad or behind your walls? It can occur that you see only a little mold on your wall, decide to remove that section of wall and patch it up, only to find that you have mold growth inside your walls and now that you’ve opened it up, spores have infected your entire home.

You can find a lot of “do it yourself” sites on-line that recommend how to handle mold yourself without calling in a professional. Unfortunately, most of these sites don’t take into account what type of mold it is and don’t properly instruct you in the precautions you must take before undertaking a mold removal project (like the coverings you should wear over your clothes and shoes and how to properly seal the area so you don’t spread the mold throughout your entire house).

So back to the original question, you have found some mold in your home (or office), what do you do? In some cases, yes, you can handle it yourself. In any of the following cases, the EPA recommends hiring a professional:

  1. The mold is covering an area larger than 10 sq ft (or approximately a 3 ft x 3 ft patch)
  2. The mold is in your heating/air conditioning/ventilation system
  3. You have any health issues
  4. If the mold was caused by sewage or other contaminated water

If you are uncertain as to where the mold is but are experiencing health issues related to mold or you suspect mold (maybe you just have that musty smell but can’t tell where it’s coming from) you can easily hire a mold testing company to come test your home/office and determine where the mold is, how much mold there is and what type of mold it is.

My basement flooded recently, and now there’s mold growing. It makes sense that I would want to rely on a professional to get rid of it! I don’t want to risk it getting out of control.

My parents moved into their new home and they found signs of mold in their attic. It was explained here that they should first know what type of mold is it. Moreover, it’s advisable to hire professionals for mold remediation.

I had no idea that there were different types of mold. This is a great thing to keep in mind when you are trying to deal with this kind of issue in your own home. My sister would appreciate knowing that mold testing by a professional is the best kind of testing to be done since she is worried about mold in her new home.

That’s good to know that not all molds are the same and some require precautions so it’s best to call a professional. My basement has some mold in the corners so I’m looking up how to remove it. I didn’t realize that different molds needed to be taken care of differently so I’ll need to find a mold service that can identify it and remove it for me.
