Firework safety

Firework safety

Parades, BBQs, fireworks, block parties and red, white and blue. When t’s the 4th of July, that means celebrating often with hours of fireworks.

For those of you who chose to put on your own fireworks show, safety is imperative and no small matter. Fireworks are fire hazards as well as a physical danger, but they’re also a lot of fun so let’s do this right!

  • DO use common sense.

  • DO NOT allow young children to handle or use fireworks and DO closely supervise teens who will be using fireworks.

  • DO only use fireworks outdoors and always have water ready nearby.

  • DO read the instructions and labels on your fireworks before using them.

  • DO obey the law and ensure you can legally use fireworks where you plan on using them.

  • DO only light one firework at a time.

  • DO NOT use homemade or illegal fireworks or explosives.

  • DO NOT light fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • DO soak your used fireworks in water before throwing them away.

That’s a good idea to have some water nearby in case something goes wrong. I plan on using the fireworks responsibly, but it would probably be better to be safe rather than sorry. I’ll make sure to have a bucket of water or the hose nearby if I decide to do fireworks with my family this summer.
